How we make money and what that means for you.
The Short Version
We earn referral fees ($40-100) when you switch electricity plans through our partner brokers. However, our recommendations are based entirely on projected cost for your usage — not on which plans we earn from.
How It Works
When you decide to switch plans through our service:
- You provide your contact information and consent to be contacted by a licensed electricity broker
- We send your information (name, email, phone, usage data, ESI ID, recommended plan) to our partner broker
- The broker facilitates your enrollment with the electricity provider
- We receive a referral fee from the broker once your switch is completed
The referral fee is paid by the broker, not by you. You pay only the rates specified by your chosen electricity plan.
How We Choose Recommendations
Our recommendation algorithm ranks plans by projected annual cost for your specific usage pattern. We calculate:
- Energy charges based on your monthly usage
- TDU delivery charges for your territory
- Applicable taxes and fees
- Bill credits (if your usage qualifies)
- Time-of-use premiums (based on typical usage distribution)
Referral fees do not factor into our ranking. The plan we earn most from may be ranked #5 or not ranked at all if it costs you more.
Potential Conflicts of Interest
We want to be transparent about potential conflicts:
- We only earn if you switch. This creates an incentive to recommend switching even when staying might be better. We address this by showing your current plan cost and explicitly telling you if staying is the better option.
- Not all providers work with brokers. Some electricity providers only sell direct. These plans are still included in our analysis and may be recommended as best, even though we earn nothing from them.
- Broker relationships vary. Some brokers pay higher referral fees than others. We do not factor this into recommendations, but we acknowledge the incentive exists.
Our Commitment
- We will always show you the mathematically best plan for your usage
- We will tell you if staying with your current plan is the better option
- We will not hide or demote plans based on commission
- We will be transparent about how we make money
Our Partners
We work with licensed electricity brokers regulated by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT). All partners must be licensed REPs (Retail Electric Providers) or work under a licensed REP.
